Overflying The Gambia may require advance authorization, depending on the operation. The Gambia Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) currently states that non-scheduled flights into, from or over Gambian territory require a permit at least 72 hours before the intended flight. That rule makes the Gambia overflight permit a planning problem, not a last-minute task.
The essentials, taken from the GCAA’s published permit guidance, are these: the authority is the Gambia Civil Aviation Authority, the minimum lead time is 72 hours, the current published single-request charge for an overflight is USD 150, applications go through the GCAA online portal, and a reference number is issued on submission while a permit number follows only after successful clearance. Last regulatory review: October 2026.
If you would like a specialist to prepare and coordinate the request, you can request an overflight permit through AeroWorld.
Do You Need a Gambia Overflight Permit?
The GCAA states that all non-scheduled flights into, from or over the territory of The Gambia require a permit at least 72 hours before the intended flight. The wording covers three situations: flights into The Gambia, flights from The Gambia and flights over The Gambia. For an overflight, you are in the third group.
This one permit process does not cover every aviation authorization in the country. For example, the GCAA separately requires prior authorization for foreign-registered aircraft doing aerial work in The Gambia, which is a different regulatory process. Anyone overflying The Gambia on a non-scheduled flight should treat the 72-hour rule as the starting point. If your operation is anything other than ordinary overflight or landing, check the GCAA’s guidance for that operation.
What Is a Gambia Overflight Permit?
A overflight permit, which the GCAA describes as an overflight or enroute permit, is authorization for the applicable flight to overfly Gambian territory. It is coordinated through the GCAA permit process. It is also a different thing from several documents operators sometimes lump it in with:
- a landing permit, which concerns an operation into a Gambian airport
- ATC clearance, which is operational and tactical
- ground handling, which concerns services on the ground
- an aircraft’s general regulatory certification
Operators also look for it as Gambia overflight clearance or as a Gambia airspace permit, but the GCAA’s own term is an overflight or enroute permit. Use the GCAA’s terminology when you search, because it is how the authority describes the service on its own page.
How Early Do You Need to File?
The current GCAA guidance requires the permit at least 72 hours before the intended flight. Read that as a minimum, not a target. It does not mean you can wait until exactly 72 hours before departure and expect everything to line up.
Instead, build the permit into your flight planning early enough to allow for preparing the information, submitting the request, making payment and waiting for clearance. AeroWorld does not publish a recommended buffer beyond the 72-hour rule, because the GCAA does not publish one; what matters is that the full process is completed in time.

According to the current GCAA permit page, an overflight or enroute request should include the following. This is the GCAA’s published list, not an AeroWorld checklist.
- operator name
- operator address
- aircraft type
- registration
- callsign
- aircraft base
- estimated date and time of arrival
- point of departure
- destination
- full itinerary or routing
- point of entry
- point of exit
- pilot name
- pilot nationality
- souls on board
- purpose of flight
- type of cargo on board
- type of arms and ammunition on board, where applicable
- telephone
- billing address
- billing email
- billing telephone number
The GCAA may also request any other information it requires, so keep the request complete and consistent.
Do You Need Passenger and Crew Biodata for an Overflight?
Not according to the GCAA’s page. It specifically states that crew and passenger biodata are required in addition to the listed information for landing requests only. Do not assume that full passenger and crew biodata is automatically needed for every overflight application.
How Much Does a Gambia Overflight Permit Cost?
The GCAA currently lists the following published single-request charges:
| Request type | Published single-request charge |
|---|
| Landing | USD 150 |
| Overflight | USD 150 |
Fees can change, so confirm the amount on the GCAA permits page before you pay. Treat USD 150 as the current published figure, not a permanently fixed price.
How to Apply for a Gambia Overflight Permit
The application follows seven steps.
- Confirm the operation. Decide whether the flight falls within the GCAA non-scheduled overflight or landing permit requirement.
- Gather the required information. Operator and aircraft details, routing, entry and exit points, timing, pilot details, souls on board, cargo details and billing information.
- Submit through the GCAA portal. The GCAA directs applicants to the GCAA permit portal.
- Receive the reference number. The GCAA issues a reference number when the required information is submitted.
- Make payment. Payments must indicate the issued reference number.
- Send payment evidence as required. The GCAA page instructs applicants to forward the payment slip, instruction or advice to the email address listed on its page.
- Await clearance. A permit number is issued after successful clearance.
Prefer not to handle the portal yourself? Request an overflight permit and AeroWorld will coordinate the submission.
What Happens After You Submit the Application?
Think of the process as a sequence: the application is submitted, a reference number is issued, payment is linked to that reference number, the authority clears the request, and only then is a permit number issued.
The GCAA explicitly states that non-compliance with the procedure can result in refusal and that payments are non-refundable. Submission is not approval.
Does Submitting the Application Guarantee a Gambia Overflight Permit?
No. Submitting the request creates the request, nothing more. The GCAA states that the permit number is issued upon successful clearance. A submitted application, or even a payment confirmation, is not proof that the permit has been issued, so wait for the permit number before you rely on the flight. Until clearance is granted, there is no Gambia overflight clearance to rely on.
What Can Cause a Gambia Permit Request to Be Refused or Delayed?
The GCAA has not published a list of common rejection reasons, so we will not invent one. The source-supported points are:
- Incomplete or non-compliant submission. The GCAA states that failing to follow its procedure can result in refusal.
- Payment and reference mismatch. Payments must indicate the application reference number.
- Late filing. The published minimum is 72 hours before the intended flight.
- Operation-specific requirements. Some operations, such as foreign-registered aerial work, have a separate authorization process.
Routing, aircraft, timing and operator information should also be complete and consistent across the request, which is simply good practice.
Overflight Permit vs Landing Permit
The two permits are requested through the same GCAA page, but they are not the same, and the information required differs in some respects.
| Item | Overflight | Landing |
|---|
| Purpose | Transit over Gambian territory | Operation into a Gambian airport |
| Current published single-request fee | USD 150 | USD 150 |
| Minimum timing | 72 hours | 72 hours |
| Entry and exit routing | Required | Required |
| Local agent or contact | Not listed as required for overflight | Listed for landing |
| Crew and passenger biodata | Not listed as required for overflight | Required for landing |
These differences come from the GCAA’s published permit requirements. If your flight will land, read our guides to the Gambia landing permit at GBYD and the broader Gambia flight permit process.
Do Scheduled Flights Need an Overflight Permit?
Be careful here. It is not accurate to say that only non-scheduled flights need permits. The GCAA permit page includes a specific statement that scheduled overflight for operators not operating into The Gambia is subject to the same rate. Operators of scheduled services should confirm the applicable authorization for their specific operation before filing.
Presidential Flights and Other Special Operations
The GCAA lists an exemption for presidential aircraft carrying the Head of State, and states that presidential flight permit requests must be channelled through the Ministry of Transport. That exemption should not be generalized to other VIP, government or state operations without supporting documentation from the relevant authority.
Gambia Overflight Permit vs Flight Planning
Permit coordination is one part of operational preparation, not the whole. The GCAA’s Air Navigation Services department states that its AIS unit is responsible for aeronautical information services, including filing flight plans and briefing pilots and airline operators. An overflight permit and a flight plan are therefore separate processes, and a Gambia airspace permit does not replace the flight plan. For the planning side, see our international flight planning support and our guide to building a charter flight plan.
Overflight Permit vs Ground Handling
For an aircraft that only overflies, ground handling is not required in the way it is for a landing. But if the flight changes from an overflight to a landing at Banjul, you may need landing permit coordination, ground handling, passenger and crew arrangements, fueling and catering. Our Banjul ground handling services cover those needs, and routes beyond The Gambia are covered in our West Africa overflight permit guide.
